Background Information of the 10 Days Uganda Cultural Safari
Kampala
It’s the capital and largest city of Uganda. It occupies a series of hills at an elevation of about 3,900 feet (1,190 meters) and is situated in the southern part of the country, just north of Lake Victoria.
Kampala lies just north of mengo, the capital of the Kingdom of Buganda in the 19th century. It was selected in 1890 by Capt. Fredrick (later lord) Lugard as the headquarters of the imperial British East Africa Company.
Lugard’s fort on old Kampala hill remained the Ugandan colonial administrative headquarters until 1905, when it was moved to Entebbe.
In 1949 became the capital of independent Uganda. Parliamentary and commercial buildings, industry, and residential areas are separated into sectors
Situated in the country’s’ most prosperous agricultural section, Kampala exports coffee, cotton, tea, tobacco and sugar
Jinja
Jinja is a town in southern Uganda, on the shore of Lake Victoria. The source of the Nile, at coronation park, is marked by a garden and a monument honoring British explorer john Hanning speke.
Owen falls dam and bujagali dam both span the Nile. Farther north on the river, itanda falls is known for its white-water rapids.
East of Jinja, on Lake Victoria. Samuka island is home to birdlife, including the little egrets
In 1954, the construction of the Owen falls dam submerged the ripon falls. Most of the flat rocks that gave the area its name disappeared under as well.
The local baganda called the area “the stones” which is “mayinja” in Luganda. The name “jinja” is derived from this description of what the area looked like and can be found in the notes of John Hanning Speke the first European to lay his eyes on the source of the Nile.
