Safari Details of the 15 Days Uganda Bird Watching Safari

Day 1: Kampala – Kibale Forest National Park

You will be picked up by our representative from the airport and will be briefed about the safari.  You will then be transferred to Kibale Forest National Park by road via Fort Portal, where you will have lunch.  Proceed to Kibale National Park, late afternoon birding at the park entrance and campsite.

Dinner and overnight at Luxury Ndali lodge, Mid-range Kibale Forest Camp, Budget Chimpanzee Forest guest house, Chimps Nest or Chimpanzee Guest House.

 

Day 2 of the 15 Days Uganda Bird Watching Safari: Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest 

You will be transferred to the park headquarters after breakfast for a briefing ahead of Chimpanzee tracking. You will then set out in the forest in search of Chimpanzees. The park is home to an astonishing 12 species of primates and provides one of the highest concentrations of primates in the world. It is also home to at least 335 species and over 144 species of butterflies.

Examples of the birds include the  Red-winged Francolin, Red-chested Flufftail, White-naped Pigeon, African Pitta, Joyful Greenbul, Grey-winged Robin, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Grey-throated Flycatcher, Crested Flycatcher, Masked and Black-capped Apalis, Uganda Woodland Warbler, Chestnut-winged Starling, Orange-tufted and Tiny Sunbirds and Grey-headed Olive-back.

You will return to the lodge for lunch and go back in the afternoon for birding.

Day 3 of the 15 Days Uganda Bird Watching Safari: Birding in Kibale Forest National Park 

After breakfast, you will set off to the forest and will spend the whole morning there and return for lunch and in the afternoon you will visit Bigodi swamp eco-tourism to look for different bird species like the Shining Blue Kingfisher, Blue Throated Roller and other rare species and also find the fruiting trees, which attract Narina Trogon, Pied Hornbill, Yellow Spotted, Hairy Breasted and Yellow-Billed.

Day 4 of the 15 Days Uganda Bird Watching Safari: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Morning Road Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park after breakfast. You will be driven along the Rwenzori ranges and the savanna grasslands. Queen Elizabeth hosts a large variety and volume of wildlife. It boasts one of the highest biodiversity ratings of any game park in the world, from the open Savannah to the rainforest, dense swamps, and beautiful crater lakes, to the vastness of Lake Edward. Boasts about 100 species that include Hippos, Lions, Buffaloes, Leopard, Spotted Hyenas, and the elusive giant forest hog.

A home to over 606 species of birds found here, including the martial eagle, black-rumped buttonquail, Verreaux’s eagle owl and African skimmer, White-tailed Eagle, Papyrus Canary, Shoebill, to name but a few. The primates include Chimps, Black and white Colobus Monkeys, Blue, Black Faced Red Colobus, and Red Tailed monkeys and Olive Baboons.

Day 5: Birding in Maramagambo Forest

You will be driven to Maramagambo Forest for birding after breakfast. Come across different primates, including the Blue Lake, the only one in East Africa. Visit the bat cave and the hunter’s cave, where you will take a close look at the bats, rock python and the forest cobras. Return to the lodge for lunch. You will go for more birding in the afternoon around Lake George and Mweya Peninsula.

Day 6 of the 15 Days Uganda Bird Watching Safari: Game Drives, Boat Cruises & Birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Embark on an early morning game drive after a light breakfast in search of animals. You will encounter Kobs, Hyenas, Giant forest hog, Bushbucks, Oribi, Waterbucks, Elephant, Lions, Leopards, and comical Warthogs. Drive back to the lodge for mid-morning breakfast and wait for lunch. After lunch, you will enjoy a 2-hour boat cruise on the Kazinga channel and into Lake Edward.

This trip passes through possibly the highest pods of Hippos, and many animals may be seen drinking at the water’s edge. This launch cruise offers an excellent platform for photography, bird watching and game viewing, ideal for the Uganda safari. The prolific bird life is colourful and stupendous, with over 550 resident species.

Day 7: Drive to Bwindi, birding through the Ishasha Sector 

Morning Road Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest after breakfast. Drive through the southern sector of Queen Elizabeth called Ishasha. You will encounter animals such as waterbucks, elephants, antelopes, buffalo, and kobs. You will have lunch and continue driving in search of the tree-climbing lions. Proceed to Bwindi, the home of mountain gorillas. Bwindi is the birdwatcher’s haven! It holds 348 species of birds and supports 24 of the 26 Albertine Rift Endemics that occur in Uganda, and seven red data book species.

Bwindi is a treasure chest of flora and fauna and the richest forest in East Africa. It is also a home to the Albertine Rift Endemics-Red-throated Alethe, Archer’s Robin-Chat, Kivu Ground Thrush, Montane Masked Apalis, Collared Apalis, Grauer’s Warbler, Short-tailed Warbler, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, Rwenzori Batis, and Strange Weaver.

Day 8 of the 15 Days Uganda Bird Watching Safari: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After breakfast, transfer to the Park Headquarters, where you will be briefed about gorilla trekking. Bwindi National Park is renowned for its impressive mountain gorillas, although it is unpredictable how long you will track before finding them, since it all depends on their movement.

You will set out with a packed lunch and enough drinking water, and you are advised to wear strong, comfortable boots plus a light rain-jacket since the weather in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is highly unpredictable.

You will be provided with Walking sticks by the park rangers. Visitors are allowed to spend only one hour with the gorillas for the purpose of conservation. The ranger guide will brief you on how to conduct yourself while in the presence of the gentle giants.

In the evening, proceed to the village for a cultural walk to interact with the local people and participate in captivating traditional performances.

Day 9 of the 15 Days Uganda Bird Watching Safari: Birding in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After the early morning breakfast, you will go for birding only in the forest as you will be seeing a lot of birds like Western Bronze-naped Pigeon, Dusky and Olive Long-tailed Cuckoos, Fraser’s Eagle-Owl, Montane (Rwenzori) Nightjar, Bar-tailed Trogon, Black Bee-eater, Willcock’s Honeyguide, Fine-banded and Oriole-Finch, and many more 357 species. Came back for lunch and relaxed, then went back in the afternoon for birding, then back for dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 10: Full Day Birding in Ruhija & Mubwindi Swamp

After the morning breakfast, you will have a full day tour to Ruhija at the Mubwindi Swamp, returning to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 11 of the 15 Days Uganda Bird Watching Safari: Drive to Lake Mburo National Park

You will be driven to Lake Mburo National Park after breakfast, situated in rolling hills and open grassy valleys. This lovely landscape is complemented by Lake Mburo and four smaller lakes, beautiful and tranquil surroundings where you’ll see impala, eland, waterbuck, klipspringer, and rare topi, zebras, and buffalo. In the air, look out for starling, bee-eaters, crowned crane and even more exotic birds like Blue Naped Coucal, Bare-faced Go-Away bird, Nubian Woodpecker, Swamp Flycatcher and many more. Bird watchers will enjoy more than 250 species of birds found in this park.

Day 12: Guided Walks, Birding & Game Viewing in Lake Mburo National Park

After an early breakfast, you will take a guided lakeside walk for some birding activities and will return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you will enjoy a boat ride on Lake Mburo to see crocodiles and hippos and many birds around the lakeside, come back for dinner and overnight at Montana.

Day 13 of the 15 Days Uganda Bird Watching Safari: Game Drives & Guided Nature Walk in Lake Mburo National Park

You will go for a game drive after breakfast in search of Zebras, Topis, Elands, Impalas, Buffalos, and many others came back for lunch.

In the afternoon, you go for the guided walk on the other side of the park.

Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 14: Proceed to Mpanga Forest for Birding

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Mpanga forest for birding with a stopover at Kagaku Swamp for the Rufous-breasted Heron, Lesser jacana, Lesser Moorhen and a variety of water birds and again at Masaka Swamp before we stop for lunch in Masaka.

After lunch, you proceed to the Equator for photographs and drive to Mpanga Forest overnight.

 

Day 15: Early birding and Departure

You will go for another birding session in the forest after breakfast. You will return for lunch at the lodge and proceed to Kampala/Entebbe thereafter.
